A living inquiry for coaches

Next Generation
Complexity-Informed Coaching

Coaching for a world where people, relationships and organizations are always changing together.

01 / THE IDEA

Meet the person and the wider system.

A client may be an individual, a couple, a team or an organization. Whatever its scale, the client is shaped by relationships, histories, roles and changing conditions. The coaching conversation becomes part of that movement.

“What else is happening here, and how are we taking part in it?”
02 / WHAT TO NOTICE

Six lenses for complex moments.

These are invitations to inquiry, not a checklist or a claim to explain everything.

Interdependence

What happens here is connected to people, contexts and conditions elsewhere.

Nonlinearity

A small change can matter greatly; a large effort may have little immediate effect.

Feedback loops

Responses can reinforce a pattern or open a different possibility.

Emergence

New understanding may arise in the conversation rather than exist fully formed beforehand.

Self-organization

People and groups find patterns and ways forward without one person controlling every step.

Adaptive tension

Uncertainty and competing needs can carry useful information when held with care.

03 / THE STANCE

Curiosity with humility.

The coach helps make space for attention and inquiry while remembering that every question, distinction and interpretation influences what becomes visible.

Sense before naming

Notice the felt, relational and sometimes pre-verbal signals in a moment. Offer what you notice tentatively and check whether it resonates.

Stay with what unfolds

Resist rushing to a neat story or action. Let the client test meanings, possibilities and consequences in their own context.

04 / IN PRACTICE

Three questions to bring into a session.

Use them lightly. The most useful question is the one that fits the living moment.

  1. Who or what else is involved in this situation, even if they are not in the room?
  2. What pattern keeps repeating, and how might this conversation affect it?
  3. What is becoming possible now that was not visible at the start?
05 / CONTINUE

An addition to skilled coaching.

Complexity-informed coaching builds on established coaching competencies. It offers a way to stay present when a clear goal, a single cause or a straightforward action does not capture the whole experience.

This site is an introduction and an invitation to keep questioning: What do we know? What are we assuming? What might we be missing?
